Improvements in Tech website v0.4: Search query highlighting, suggested topics, and improved topical landing pages

By Daniel Bachhuber   Published July 12, 2011

Just a moment ago, we finished a series of technical and usability improvements to the Tech website that we’re calling version 0.4. We’d like to share a few of the most relevant ones with you.

Search query highlighting and suggested topics

A couple months ago, we rolled out improved search for the Tech website that returns results based on relevance, rather than keyword match in reverse chronological order. This latest version includes two more improvements:

  • Matching search keywords are highlighted within content, and the results are “zoomed” to the area of text with those keywords.
  • All taxonomy terms that partially or fully match your query are presented at the top of the results. These links lead to landing pages of curated content.

Check out the search for “final cut” or “data journalism

Reorganization of taxonomy term landing pages

To make taxonomy term landing pages (e.g. those pages that are a collection of all content on a given subject) more easy to digest, we’ve reorganized the layout. Introductions to the term appear clearly at the top, and we’ve given more prominence to documentation articles. Blog posts for the term appear in the right rail if they exist.

More content stats in the admin

In the admin, we’ve started working on bringing more content stats to the content creators. The “Right Now” widget shows the number of published documentation we have, and the manage users view now shows the number of published documentation by user.
